Infectious Disease Epidemiology at HSPH

Education and research on aspects of infectious disease occur in a number of HSPH departments, including:
  1. Biostatistics
  2. Epidemiology
  3. Health Policy and Management
  4. Immunology and Infectious Diseases

These departments participate in the interdisciplinary concentration in the epidemiology of infectious disease, which provides students with the capacity to monitor, prevent, and suppress diverse emerging infectious diseases, while pursuing a variety of biomedical career options in both the public and private sectors. This goal is achieved through a combination of coursework and research opportunities.

Interdisciplinary Concentration in ID Epidemiology (School-wide)

The interdisciplinary concentration in the epidemiology of infectious disease focuses on population studies incorporating both epidemiologic and laboratory methods. This academic concentration is intended for degree-seeking students who desire careers in research and teaching in infectious disease. Coursework requirements combine training in general epidemiologic theory and methods with substantive emphasis on infectious diseases; students then acquire research experience through summer projects, seminars, working groups, and meetings.

AY2011-12 Change to Infectious Disease Epidemiology Concentration Requirements

Because only one of the "Required Courses" in the Concentration is offered in AY2011-12, the requirements are changed FOR STUDENTS IN ONE-YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMS TAKEN DURING 2011-12 ONLY. These students will be allowed to complete the "Required Courses" by taking EPI501, Dynamics of Infectious Disease, and one extra course from among the Primary Electives. The requirements for these students will therefore be: EPI501, plus 7.5 credits from Primary Electives, and 5.0 credits from Secondary Electives.

For all other students (students who matriculated in AY2010-11 or before, or students doing degrees lasting >1 year) the requirements remain 5.0 credits each from Required Courses, Primary Electives and Secondary Electives.

Infectious Disease Epidemiology Area of Interest (Epidemiology Department)

For students in the Department of Epidemiology, Infectious Disease Epidemiology may be selected as one of the fourteen areas of research interest or tracks. Students choose elective courses in Infectious Disease Epidemiology and conduct thesis or dissertation research, toward fulfillment of their degree program requirements.
